War of 1812 Essay -- essays research papers
The War of 1812 American frigates won a series of single-ship engagements with British frigates, and American privateers continually hurried British shipping. The captains and crew of the frigates constitution and United States became renowned throughout America. Meanwhile, the British gradually tightened a blockade around America's coasts, ruining American trade, threatening American finances, and exposing the entire coastline to British attack. U.S. forces were not ready for war, and American hopes of conquering Canada collapsed in the campaigns of 1812 and 1813. The initial plan called for a three-pronged offensive: from Lake Champlain to Montreal; across the Niagara frontier: and into Upper Canada from Detroit. The attacks were uncoordinated, however, and all failed. In the West, General William Hull surrendered Detroit to the British in August 1812 and on the Niagara front, American troops lost the Battle of Queenston Heights in October. Also along Lake Champlain, the American forces withdrew in late November without seriously engaging the enemy. There was a standoff at Niagara, and an elaborate attempt to attack Montreal by a combined operation involving one force advancing along Lake Champlain and another sailing down the Saint Lawrence River from Lake Ontario. That operation failed at the end of the year. The only success was in the West. The Americans won control of the Detroit frontier region when Oliver Hazard Perryââ¬â¢s ships destroyed the British fleet on Lake Er...

Linguist John Swales defined discourse communities as groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals. There are a very specific set of characteristics that define a discourse community. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Group Of People" essay for you Create order A discourse community has a specific set of public goals that it intends to achieve, and these goals are the core foundation of the community and define the purpose of a discourse communityrs basis. A discourse community consists of a group of people communicating with one another with a common set of goals and interests. The term discourse community is now more than thirty years old since it was apparently first coined by Martin Nystrand, a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Nystrand 1982). Since then, it has been broadly used and debated by researchers in applied language studies as a way of identifying that communications mainly function within conventions and expectations established by communities of several varieties. As this interest in the concept has thrived, we have come to see that these communities are, in fact, distinguished by numerous features, such as how localized they are, what origins they have had, and what kinds of activity are essential to their presence. A discourse community can be considered similar to a social network made up by individuals who share some set of communicative purposes. There are different types of discourse communities. Those consisting of people who all work at the same place (as in a factory or a university department), or at the same profession in the same area (all the bakers in a town). Then, there are some discourse communities who function at a much larger scale and aim to cover a bigger area. These discourse communities could be at a national or international level, covering areas globally. The third kind of discourse community is the one which is like a hybrid of the other two. These communities work both on a local and global scale. African Students Association: The discourse community that will be discussed in this study is ?African Students Association. This community qualifies as a discourse community as it fulfills all the necessary requirements of a discourse community. The African Student Association (ASA) was formed in the year 2017 with the noble aim of creating a new space for students to grow, learn and be supported outside of the classroom. Before the initiative of the African Student Association (ASA), the campus had not seen an active equivalent organization for a lot of years. Martha-Marie Bervell 18 and Regina Baffoe 18 are the student leaders for the African Student Association. Amy Anderson, Associate Provost for Global and Intercultural Affairs and Executive Director for the Center for International Programs and Dr. Dorothy Mensah-Aggrey, Administrative Specialist for Curriculum Design and Adult Catechesis for the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives provide guidance as the advisors for the student-led organization. We established the African Student Association to create a sense of unity and inclusivity amongst students from all ethnic backgrounds, specifically African students, and to introduce cultural aspects of the different regions in Africa, Regina Baffoe expresses. It is a way for students to feel like they have a family on campus, and to have the opportunity to develop connections with people of similar cultures. Additionally, ASA serves as a resource for students to learn about events, tutoring sessions, service opportunities, and scholarships that are offered through different organizations on campus. The African Students Association or ASA qualifies as a discourse community as it has all six characteristics that a discourse community must have according to linguist John Swales. The first characteristic of a discourse community is A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals. Now, it is obvious that African Students Association or ASA fulfills the requirement because it does have a very specific goal that it is thriving to achieve. And that goal is creating a new space for students to grow, learn and be supported outside of the classroom. The African Students Association helps create a sense of unity and inclusivity amongst students from all ethnic backgrounds, specifically African students, and to introduce cultural aspects of the different regions in Africa. According to Regina Baffoe, one of the founders of African Students Association, it is a way for students to feel like they have a family on campus, and to have the opportunity to develop connections with people of similar cultures. Additionally, ASA serves as a resource for students to learn about events, tutoring sessions, service opportunities, and scholarships that are offe red through different organizations on campus. 1) The second characteristic of a discourse community is A discourse community has mechanisms of intercommunication among its members. African Students Association fulfills this requirement also. It has a lot of means of communication amongst its members. They communicate with one another via phone calls, text messages, social media groups like Facebook and messaging group chats like WhatsApp, they also hold meetings where the members get a chance to talk face-to-face, promising healthy communication amongst the members. 2) The third characteristic of a discourse community is A discourse community uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback. ASA also follows this requirement as it has a website dedicated to provide the necessary feedback to the outsiders. The organization also has a Facebook page that serves the purpose of communicating with its followers on the social media platform also. Both of these media help provide all the necessary information one needs to know about ASA and its activities. 3) The fourth characteristic of a discourse community is A discourse community utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims. ASA also has this characteristic as it uses stuff like banners, flyers and banners to raise awareness among individuals. Pamphlets are distributed, advertisements are put up on social media platforms, bake sales are organized. All of these mediums are used to promote the genre of the organization. 4) The fifth characteristic of a discourse community is In addition to owning genres, a discourse community has acquired a specific lexis. ASA has jargon specific that is unique to its own community of African students. Native dances are performed; ethnic ways of communication are used that are usually unknown to any outsider. 5) The sixth and final characteristic of a discourse community according to John Swales is A discourse community has a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise ASA fulfills this requirement too as it has its fair share of novices as well as experts that have vast grip on the theme and working of the organization. There are well-educated and well-informed individuals like the founders and the Directors that constitute the management, and, there are also some fresh students regularly enrolling in the organization as novices. Hence, the workflow is going smoothly with no hindrances.

Interview With A Registered Nurse From Georgia University...
In order to gain insight on the most frequently seen healthcare problem, I chose to interview a registered nurse from Georgia Regents Medical Center, Mrs. Denead Buoy RN, MSN. I chose this medical provider because she has had experience in her field for 17 years. During the interview, I gained valuable information about a disease that she stated she sees commonly in her in patient unit. The disease she noted was diabetes mellitus. During the interview she gave me information about the disease in terms of its causes, its frequency, and the reason she decided to identity these disease. There are two major types of diabetes mellitus, type 1 and type 2, and gestational diabetes is a third type that could occur during pregnancy. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the more common of the three types, attributing tor around 95 percent of new cases of diabetes (Prezbindowski Porth, 2005 pg. 1309 para. 1). Diabetes mellitus is caused by oneââ¬â¢s body having trouble breaking down foods they eat to convert to energy due to an inefficient supply of insulin or an inability to use insulin effectively. The source of the problem derives from beta cells located in the pancreas. These cells are special for their production of insulin and response to it. If there is a problem with the beta cells in the pancreas, then their inefficient supply and absorption of insulin results to an increased amount of glu cose in the blood stream that cannot be absorbed sufficiently which leads to a diabetic condition. If one may suspect diabetes mellitus as a health condition they are experiencing, there are common signs and symptoms that are associated with the disease. The signs and symptoms of the disease seen in clinical practice are increased urination, increased thirst, and an increased appetite. Weight lost is commonly seen in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, while weight gain is common in those with type 2 diabetes mellitus (Prezbindowski Porth, 2005 pg., 1314 para.

All the Worlds a Stage - and the Stage is My World free essay sample
For most people, the place that they feel most content and comfortable is their home. This is true for me, but my ââ¬Ëhomeââ¬â¢ is not exactly a quantifiable place. For me, my home is the stage. For as long as I can remember, everything I did or said became a ââ¬Ëproductionââ¬â¢. I would experiment with facial expressions, and sometimes I would narrate aloud whatever I was doing. ââ¬Å"Slowly, and with great premonition, she unfolded her limbs from their criss-cross-applesauce position and padded deliberately across her room where she began her descent down the stairs, toward the smell that spelled uncertain dinner for the innocent girl.â⬠My colorful vocabulary and flair for the dramatic is what prompted my parents to search for a theatrical opportunity for me. It came in the form of Childrenââ¬â¢s Chorus Member #7 in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at a local childrenââ¬â¢s theater. I was nothing if not enthusiastic. We will write a custom essay sample on All the Worlds a Stage and the Stage is My World or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page And from the moment of my first performance, I felt it. It was like nothing else a feeling of coming home. A few years ago, I learned that I only got the part because the assistant director, who knew my mother, felt bad about her cancer and wanted to give me a chance at something to do to keep me out of the house while she underwent chemotherapy. At first, I was grievously offended. I didnââ¬â¢t want their charity! But the more I think about it, the more I realize that I probably wasnââ¬â¢t that great of an actress at six years old. Thereââ¬â¢s more to acting than just ââ¬Ëbeing a naturalââ¬â¢ it is an art, and like any art, it needs practice. Without that show, I would not have learned as much as I did about theater, or fallen in love with it like I did. It also taught me something about people. People like to feel like they can help. It is of course important to have a certain level of pride, but if your pride gets in the way of someone trying to help with good intentions, then your pride is just as bad as the misdirected charity. That lady who knew my mom couldnââ¬â¢t cure her cancer, but she wanted to do something to help. As annoyed as I was that people treated me differently because they felt bad, I know now that she meant it for good, and it is childish to reject what that sympathetic woman did for us. Without it, I might have given up and never found my passion. After years of middle school shows, my junior year I had my first real lead in a high school production. The show was I Remember Mama, and I was Mama herself. It was nerve-racking and terrifying and exhausting, but Iââ¬â¢ve come to look upon that semester when I was involved in that play as my favorite so far in high school. I may not have gotten the greatest grades of my high school career (practice until 10 pm every night isnââ¬â¢t the ideal situation for doing homework), but I was doing what I loved and learning as much as I could. And as I grabbed hands with my newfound family for bows closing night, I realized the real magic of theater this group of kids who barely knew each other before was now an exhausted, wonderful family. After pouring our hearts and souls into our work, we realized that we can come together and create something that can really change peopleââ¬â¢s lives. The stage is my home, and I am lucky enough to have found it. Communication is indeed everything, and the best way I know how is on the stage. So perhaps my physical living space is in my house, but my heart, soul, and ability to change the world lives on the stage. And Iââ¬â¢ll take that over straight As any day.
